WHAT PEOPLE SAY

"My experience in the program has been very transformative, because it helped me focus on the areas I need to work on. Typically as data people, we tend to be very focused on the technical aspects of data.

Top Data People helped me look beyond the technical aspect to relationships, collaboration, better communication and tying things back to the big picture.

You can ask strategic questions, you can have domain specific questions, you can ask why certain macro trends are affecting the business...

The program helped push me in that direction without being tentative about it."

Ramdas

SVP, Bank of America

"Top Data People has been a good supplement to what I already do around career growth and really helps give a variety of perspectives, both from Solomon and from other people in the program. I think it really helps me get out of my bubble a little bit.

I have a pretty narrow perspective of the data world, mainly in people analytics, mainly at Meta. So I think it's been really good for me to get a wider view of the world and data people outside people analytics.

The most valuable element has been the networking and the coaching calls. Hearing what other people are dealing with, it makes you feel less alone and getting another perspective is really super helpful."

Sophie

People Research Scientist, Meta

"Top Data People is an excellent program if you're looking to get to the next level in your data career. Solomon created a well-structured framework to evaluate your current skills, identify strengths and areas for growth, and practical steps to advance your career.

Solomon has a lot of experience that he uses to shed light and give nuanced advice on how to work through specific situations that you're dealing with in real-time.

Perhaps the greatest value of the program, though, is the instant network you get with the cohort of data professionals in the program with you. In my past roles, I have often been one of the few if not the only data person on my broader team. Having the ability to openly discuss work challenges in a safe space with peers at and around your level is, on its own, worth the price of admission."

Michael

Senior Analyst, Coty

"I was looking into career coaches and it just seemed very surface level vs. what I saw at Top Data People.

Solomon is someone who has been in the position that I'm in now, but also the next position up, and the position after that, so I'm getting expert advice and insights from somebody who's successfully already navigated where I've been.

The program has definitely had a huge impact - specifically around navigating a corporate environment as a data person.

I was running my own consulting company for the last eight years, and I was looking for someone to help me transition successfully inside a larger organization."

MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR

SOLOMON KAHN

My name is Solomon Kahn, and I've gone from being the single "data person" to leading large data teams at multiple companies.

I led a 100 person data team at Nielsen, led data at small and unicorn startups, and consulted on data product development at multiple Fortune 50 companies.

I've seen for myself, and the hundreds of data people who reported up to me, what top data people do differently. I've put this program together to help you learn all the same skills.

  • Gone from the single data person to managing 100+ person team

  • Seen for myself and hundreds of other data people what works and doesn't

  • Former team members have gone on to wildly successful careers in senior IC roles as well as managing large teams

  • How to move across data jobs - (e.g. from analyst to scientist, or scientist to engineer)

Career Skills

  • Data careers are far less defined than most other types of careers, and there are many skills you need to thrive in that type of environment

  • We go over networking, developing technical skills, working with senior people, building business acumen, developing industry expertise, having difficult conversations, how to move up the ranks and more...

  • We cover these skills specifically in ways that are applicable to data people because there are many ways that these generic skills can be tailored for data people to be far more effective

Frequently Asked Questions

Who specifically is this program for?

Top performing senior and mid-level data people. Either data analysts, data scientists, data engineers, data PMs, or any other job that primarily involves working with data to solve problems.

Who should NOT join this program?

This course isn't a great fit for junior data people or anyone looking to break into the industry and get their first data job.

It's also not for data leaders - not because you aren't top performing data people, but because being a great data leader is a different job from being a great individual contributor and I can't teach the same content to both groups.

If you have 1-2 people you're managing and still doing IC work that's fine, but if you are a full time manager this program is not for you.

If I apply, what are the chances I will get in?

The limiting factor to getting in are the number of spots available in the cohort vs. getting accepted once you apply.

If you are a senior or mid-level employed data person whose company is sponsoring your spot in this program, you will almost certainly be accepted.

The application process is to avoid obvious mistakes where people who are clearly not a good fit join the program. (e.g. people trying to get their first data job)

I'm a leader, would this program be good for my whole data team?

If you're a data leader, I recommend you only send one person from your team per cohort. There is a benefit to being open about things that are not working which is more difficult when there are other people from your team in the cohort.

What's the time commitment required for this program?

The program is designed for senior people with demanding jobs and home lives. The time commitment is 1-2 hours per week, with most content, including recorded coaching calls, available on demand.

Will I achieve all my goals by joining this program?

Like all programs of this sort - you get out of it what you put into it.

This program is more like a map than a shortcut. Data work is hard, and skill development takes time.

However, compared to wandering aimlessly, a map seems like a magical shortcut. People on the outside will see you achieve things, but won't understand how.

From the inside, there is no trick. Just hard work SMARTLY APPLIED.

Are there specific times I need to be available?

Most content is available on demand in the member area. Group coaching calls are at 12pm EST every other Tuesday, and are recorded.

When is the start date?

This program has cohorts that start at the beginning of every quarter.

Will my company pay for this?

Most participants in the program are sponsored by their company. Here's an email you can send your manager:

Subject: Professional Development Program

Hey {Manager},

I came across this 6-month professional development program designed for high performing data people that focuses on creating more business impact as a data person.

Details are at https://www.topdatapeople.com - it's a combination of a curriculum, coaching, and a community of other data people that go through the program in the same cohort. The goal is that I can immediately apply the lessons I'm learning to my job.

It costs a bit more than going to one of the big vendor conferences, but given it's a six month program, I think it's a good value.
